Common KuneKune Pig Questions

As a potential owner of KuneKune Pigs, you may have several questions about this unique and charming breed. To help you make an informed decision and better understand what it’s like to raise and care for KuneKunes, we’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions addressing various aspects of KuneKune ownership.

How Big do KuneKunes Get?

Full-grown, Kunekune pigs typically reach up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) in length and around 24 inches (60 centimeters) in height at the shoulder. Mature sows (females) generally weigh between 120-200 pounds (54-90 kg), while boars (males) can reach weights of 200-300 pounds (90-136 kg)

We cover this in our article in depth about KuneKune Size.

No genetically “mini” micro KuneKunes under 100 lbs exist – rather all robust stocky pigs reflect unchanged ancestry. Support optimal growth through balanced nutritional provisions.

What is COI for KuneKune Pigs?

The Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI) measures genetic relatedness between two pigs by calculating percentages of shared relatives. A COI over 10% is considered high risk and should be avoided at all opportunities. A COI below 5% should be a goal for most breeders.

Our aim is to breed genetically diverse, healthy pigs with even healthier offspring.

All of the animals we sell have a COI of less than 5% and breeding pairs are often sold with potential offspring of less than 3%.

How Many Piglets do Kune Kunes Have?

KuneKune piglet litter sizes range between 6 to 8 piglets. However, unmatched first pregnancy attempts may yield upwards of 12 piglets. Litters with only 1 or 2 piglets remain very rare.

Litter counts primarily depend on sow age, size, nutrition level and genetic background. Once mature over 2 years old, proven Kunekune mothers can regularly birth healthy abundant litters potentially doubling herd sizes annually.

How Long Do KuneKune Pigs Live?

Under proper care, the Kune Kune Lifespan is typically 10-15 years. Maximum reported lifespans reach ages over 20 years old, while neglect may shorten average longevity closer to 8 years old.

Providing high-quality nutritional options, vaccinations, exercise opportunities, foraging environmental provisions, genetics screening, and proactive veterinary monitoring from youth through maturity helps ensure your treasured KuneKunes thrive toward peak geriatric ages through attentive empathy.

Are Kunekune Pigs Worth It?

KuneKune pigs are prized for their exceptional meat quality, gentle temperament, and easy handling, making them the perfect choice for small-scale, homegrown pork production.

These efficient grazers convert pasture, kitchen scraps, and vegetables from garden waste into premium, flavorful cuts perfect for artisanal charcuterie and succulent roasts.

The breed’s higher fat-to-meat ratio results in tender, juicy pork that surpasses other breeds. Their manageable size and docile nature make them ideal for small farming operations, ensuring stress-free handling and care.

Can Kunekune Pigs Be House Pets?

KuneKunes make friendly house pets or on small farms thanks to their:

  • Stable midsize frames
  • Trainable intellect
  • Peaceful Unaggressive Dispositions (despite formidable tusks)
  • Minimal care needs relative to larger commercial swine.

They’ve inherited an ease of handling from Asian ancestral wild boars renders them docile and overtly affectionate when properly socialized young.
